Promotion to La Liga

The primary goal for teams in Segunda División is, of course, to earn promotion to La Liga. The top two teams at the end of the season automatically secure promotion, while teams finishing third to sixth participate in playoffs for the third promotion spot. This sets the stage for intense matches and nerve-wracking moments for fans.

On the flip side, the bottom four teams of the Segunda División have to fear relegation to Segunda División B, the third division of Spanish football. The battle against relegation can be just as thrilling and captivating as the race for promotion, adding extra allure to the competition for fans.

The diversity of Segunda División

A notable feature of the Segunda División is its emphasis on talent development. Many of Spain's top clubs use the league as a stepping stone for young talents to gain experience before they get promoted to La Liga. This has led to the emergence of some remarkable players who began their careers in Segunda División.

Furthermore, Segunda División is exceptionally diverse, with teams hailing from various regions of Spain. This offers fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions of different cities while enjoying their favorite sport.

Champions and special football stadiums

From Real Valladolid's purple stadium to the Estadio Municipal de Ipurua amidst Eibar's apartment blocks. Discover the echoing stands of the RCD Espanyol stadium and the stadium on the Spanish island of Tenerife, the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. Or how about the beautiful Estadio El Sardinero, the stadium of Racing Santander.  In the Segunda División, you regularly end up in a unique, authentic Spanish football stadium. They are all worth visiting, we cannot stress this often enough.

What could be better than enriching your football weekend with a visit to one of the many football matches played in the Segunda División? Last years' champions have set the bar high, a true football spectacle to behold.
