The origin of Estádio da Luz

The official name of both the old and the new stadium is Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, but the old stadium was already referred to as Estádio da Luz and this is still the case with the new stadium. Luz is the name of the neighbourhood the stadium is in. This name derives from a church in the vicinity of the neighbourhood. Other nicknames of the stadium are ‘o Catedral’ and ‘o Inferno da Luz’. The stadium is characterized by the light in the stadium. The sunlight penetrates the rooftop, so the field is illuminated by natural light. The rooftop seems to float above the stands.
