Read on to find out everything you need to know about Atalanta Bergamo's iconic Gewiss Stadium.

Concise history of the Gewiss Stadium

The Gewiss Stadium, home of Atalanta Bergamo, has a long and glorious history. Built in 1928, the Brumana – as the stadium was originally called – initially had a capacity of 12,000 seats. Over the years, two stands were added: the Curva Nord and Curva Sud. Today, the original Tribuna Rinascimento (Renaissance Tribune) is covered by an extensive roof. As is often the case in Italy, the Gewiss Stadium used to host two players: Atalanta Bergamo and Unione Calcio AlbinoLeffe, both clubs based in Bergamo. Since May 2017, the stadium has been the exclusive property of Atalanta Bergamo; the club bought the stadium from the municipality.

Renovations Gewiss Stadium

In recent years, Gewiss Stadium has undergone several renovations to transform it into a modern, multifunctional complex. Improved seating, multiple dining and drinking facilities and an underground car park. Thanks to the recent renovations, the Gewiss Stadium now also meets the classification for European football stadiums. This finally allows Atalanta Bergamo to play European matches at home. The total capacity of the Gewiss Stadium today is 24,000.

Naming of the stadium

The Gewiss Stadium was given its current name because of a major sponsorship agreement with Gewiss, a leading electrical engineering and home automation company. Gewiss not only flaunts the stadium's naming rights but is also Atalanta Bergamo's shirt sponsor. The partnership with Gewiss has not only contributed to the modernisation of the stadium, but has also helped ensure the club's financial stability. Before Gewiss became Atalanta's sponsor, the stadium's names included Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, Stadio Comunale and Stadio Mario Brumana.
